During the campaign...Main events that happened during the Birmingham campaign:
One of the main events was project C the C stood for confrontation. Project C ran for several days of nonviolent protesting which consisted of mass marches’, boycotts and sit in’s at segregated places like all-white churches and all-white shopping places. The police controlled by Bull Conner had to start to arrest people in the marches and sit in’s, protesters soon filled up jails in Birmingham. On April 12, 1963 Martin Luther King Jr was put in jail for participating in a protest (protests had now become illegal in Birmingham). Knowing he would be arrested him and a handful of his friends wound up in jail, and being one of the most influential black leaders at the time he only served 4 sort days. In that time space of 4 days King Jr wrote a letter to his companions saying keep on protesting and keep trying this letter was called “From inside of Birmingham Jail”. Due to publicity of his arrest he was released very early, all around America people found out about the black man Martin Luther King Jr writing a letter to his people from inside of his cell. When he was released 4 days later, he came out and had realised that violence had erupted all around the city with people blowing up places, starting riots and setting cars and buildings on fire. After all of the main shenanigans someone had tried to kill King Jr by blowing up the hotel he was staying at, luckily he was not in the building when the bomb went off as it had destroyed walls and part of the neighbouring building. The military was brought in to control the matter and brought an end to the segregation, death, anger and unneeded misery. |
